I Don't Know Much about Art But I do Know my Algo Charts

[Redhill Technologies] Strangely artistic charts generated by algo trading engines. The data was gathered by Nanex and the story picked up by FT’s Alphaville.

CESR Says European Consolidated Tape is a "Necessity"

[Redhill Technologies] Following a similar call from FESE (see an earlier post) CESR are saying the European Consolidated Tape is a must.

The real question is now not “when” but “how” and by “whom”. That is, will it be led by the regulators or the industry. In Europe, both these camps have a lot of voices so either option will have its difficulties.

My own view is that it should be industry-led (CESR
shares this view) and that the market data format is the key technical consideration. Steve Grob of Fidessa suggests the FIX Protocol could fit the bill in his blog. I’m no great fan of FIX for the high-speed dissemination of market data, but for a consolidated tape a standard and widely used format, like FIX, is critical.

Have your own say at my LinkedIn
poll.

NASDAQ OMX to Acquire World-Leading Market Surveillance System Provider SMARTS

[Redhill Technologies] A good deal for both NASDAQ and SMARTS.

Nasdaq gets a market leader in a niche, technically difficult market (and some very smart guys - pardon the pun!) and SMARTS gets the scale and clout it has lacked (and, I would assume, a large amount of cash).

NYSE Euronext Creates European Corporate Bond Trading Platform

[Redhill Technologies] NYSE Euronext to help the Cassiopeia Committee kick start the European corporate bonds market with technology. Building on the successful NYSE Arca Europe model, NYSE will reuse UTP to deploy a pan-European MTF for corporate bonds (the “Cassiopée MTF” ).

Perhaps there is life yet in Paris (contrary to earlier reports!)

NYSE Euronext Opens ‘NYSE Euronext London’

[Redhill Technologies] While the name NYSE Euronext London covers most of the western hemisphere this is all about London and Paris.

It is both a significant entry to the London market, where the LSE is already being crowded out by Chi-X and BATS and a major move for the NYSE away from Paris.

NYSE Euronext has invested heavily in London recently (data centres, Smartpool, NYSE ARCA Europe, SuperFeed, etc.) leaving Paris with only the Euronext markets and the spiritual home of UTP development. Perhaps this marks the
beginning of the end?

[Redhill Technologies] “Official” backing for a move towards a consolidated European market data feed.

Chi-X Japan Receives Launch Approval

Chi-X Japan’s PTS license Granted - Trading Expected To Begin July 29

[Redhill Technologies] Japan’s first equities ATS. Has TSE done enough with its investment in technology (Arrowhead, NYSE Liffe) and price restructuring to maintain its grip on the Japanese trading markets? While TSE has had more time to shore up it defences, many European and North American incumbent exchanges have found the Chi-X mix of high-speed/low-cost/innovative trading model hard to compete with...

NASDAQ And Xignite To Provide On-Demand Tick Data Via Cloud Computing Platform

[Redhill Technologies] A new solution to an old problem... While traders have always needed access to historical data to exercise their algos, solutions have generally been bespoke and data storage heavy (and therefore costly).

Pushing it into the “Cloud” and making it Data-On-Demand will certainly lower costs and provide an innovative solution but will bandwidth just become the new bottleneck?
